                        PETSEC ANNOUNCES JOINT VENTURE
                           WITH COASTAL OIL AND GAS
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Petsec Energy (ASX:  PSA; NYSE:  PSJ) has signed  participation  and joint
venture  agreements with Coastal Oil and Gas (Coastal) in respect of
exploration leases Vermilion 47 and West Cameron 515/516 in the Gulf of
Mexico, USA.

The agreement provides for Coastal to earn a 75% working interest in each
lease by carrying Petsec through the drilling and casing of a well on each of
the Vermilion 47 and West Cameron 515 blocks. Petsec will retain a 25% working
interest in each lease and receive reimbursement of a portion of past costs.

The wells are expected to spud in the third quarter of this year. The
Vermilion 47 well will be drilled to a measured depth of approximately 5,213
metres (17,100 feet) and the West Cameron 515 well to a measured depth of
approximately 3,750 metres (12,300 feet).
