Re: Nuveen Flagship Multistate Trust III - CIK No. 0001020661
Request for Withdrawal of Amendment to Registration Statement on
Form 485 BPOS; accession number 0000950131-99-005492
         File No. 333-16611

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Due to a printer's error in filing post-effective amendments for each of the
Nuveen Flagship Multistate Trust I, the Nuveen Flagship Multistate Trust III,
and the Nuveen Flagship Multistate Trust IV on September 28, 1999, an extra
filing was made.

Post-Effective Amendment Number 4 to the Registration Statement on Form N-1A for
the Nuveen Flagship Multistate Trust III (the "Registrant") appeared to have
been filed twice. The first filing, accession number 0000950131-99-005492, was
incorrectly listed as "Nuveen Flagship Multistate Trust III" and used the 1933
Act file number for that trust. In fact, this filing was the post-effective
amendment for the Nuveen Flagship Multistate Trust I. The second filing,
accession number 0000950131-99-005493, was in fact the filing for the Nuveen
Flagship Multistate Trust III.

The remaining post-effective amendments for the Nuveen Flagship Multistate Trust
I, accession number 0000950131-99-005500, and the Nuveen Flagship Multistate
Trust IV, accession number 0000950131-99-005494, were correctly filed on
September 28, 1999.

The Registrant requests that the filing incorrectly listed as Post-Effective
Amendment Number 4 for the Nuveen Flagship Multistate Trust III, accession
number 0000950131-99-005492, be withdrawn pursuant to Rule 477(a) under the
Securities Act of 1933.

Sincerely,

/s/ Larry W. Martin
