Re: VAN ECK FUNDS -
Core International Index Fund
File Nos. 2-97596 and 811-4297
------------------------------
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Pursuant to Rule 477 promulgated under the Securities Act of 1933, as
amended, Van Eck Funds (the "Registrant") hereby requests the withdrawal of
Post-Effective Amendment No. 42 to its Registration Statement, filed with the
Commission on May 16, 1996 in order to create a new series of the Registrant to
be named Core International Index Fund (the "Fund"), and of Post-Effective
Amendment No. 44, a delaying amendment as to the Fund subsequently filed on June
20, 1996.
It had been intended that the primary distribution channel for the Fund be
investment advisers. In order to accomplish that, it would have been necessary
to participate in a number of so-called "mutual fund market places." However, it
has developed that the cost of such participation would increase the expenses of
the Fund so as to make it uncompetitive as currently structured. While
management is evaluating other options for the Fund, it has no immediate plans
of marketing it. Therefore, instead of using staff time to review disclosure
relating to the Fund at this time, we are requesting withdrawal of these
Post-Effective Amendments.
Further communications regarding this withdrawal request may be directed to
the undersigned at (212) 293-2031 or to Susan Grant at (212) 293-2141.
Very truly yours,
/s/ Thaddeus Leszczynski
