                               Dated May 20, 1996



     The subsection entitled "Portfolio Management" pertaining to the Emerging
Markets Portfolio on page 48 is hereby amended by adding the following
individual:


     Terence F. Mahony    Managing Director, the Adviser, TCW Asset Management
                          Company and Trust company of the West since April
                          1996. Previously he was Chief Investment Officer for
                          Global Emerging Markets at HSBC Asset Management
                          (September 1993 to April 1996) and prior thereto was a
                          Director at Baring Asset Management.
