                  SUPPLEMENT TO PROSPECTUS DATED APRIL 30, 1996



The name of the  insurance  company  issuer of the  variable  annuity  contracts
offered by the Prospectus,  Northwestern  National Life Insurance  Company,  has
been changed to ReliaStar Life Insurance Company,  effective August 1, 1996. The
name of the Separate Account has also been changed from Northstar/NWNL  Variable
Account to Northstar Variable Account,  also effective August 1, 1996. ReliaStar
Life Insurance  Company remains a direct,  wholly-owned  subsidiary of ReliaStar
Financial Corp.








                 The date of this supplement is August 1, 1996.
